The U.S. Budget:  Power, Politics and Priorities

 

Fall 2004 Speakers:

Alice Rivlin, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., and former vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board (1996-1999), spoke to the Hamilton community on October 11, 2004.  Ms. Rivlin was founding director of the Congressional Budget Office (1975-1983) and a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship (1983).  Radcliffe and Harvard educated, Dr. Rivlin has taught at Georgetown and Harvard Universities, served on several boards, and is the author of numerous books and papers related to the U.S. Budget and economic issues. Lawrence J. Korb, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, spoke to the Hamilton community on November 10, 2004.  Mr. Korb served as Assistant Secretary of Defense from 1981 to 1985, during which time he was responsible for administering much of the defense budget. In addition to serving as Vice President and Director of Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (1998-2002), Mr. Korb has held several academic positions, served on a number of committees relating to foreign affairs, and written numerous books and articles on national security issues.  More...

Spring 2005 Speakers:

Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, the Eleonore Raoul Professor of the Humanities and Professor of History at Emory University, spoke to the Hamilton community on January 27, 2005.  Bryn Mawr and Harvard educated, Dr. Fox-Genovese has taught at several schools and universities, including Emory University, where she founded the Institute for Women's Studies, SUNY Binghamton and the University of Rochester; and is the author of numerous books and papers.  Among her many awards and distinctions are the 2003 National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Cardinal Wright Award from the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars.  More...

Gloria Feldt, former President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America since 1996, spoke to the Hamilton community on February 2, 2005.  Before joining Planned Parenthood in 1974, Ms. Feldt taught in the Head Start program.  A renowned public speaker, Ms. Feldt has lectured widely, written commentary for several major newspapers and journals, appeared on numerous radio and television networks, and is the author of two books about women's rights.  More...


Leila Talani is Director of Studies for the Politics with Economics Programme of the Department of European Studies at the University of Bath, UK; and a Lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science.  She spoke about "The Dollar, the Euro, and the Future of European Integration" on February 27th.  Professors Didar Erdinc, Economics, and Alan Cafruny, Government, served as commentators at the lecture.

Donald F. Kettl, Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute, addressed the Hamilton community March 7, 2005.  Dr. Kettl is executive Director of the Century Foundation's Project on Federalism and Homeland Security and also Academic Coordinator of the Government Performance Project (source: www.ssc.upenn.edu).  He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Transformation of Governance (winner of the 2003 Louis Brownlow Book Award for best book in public administration) and Deficit Politics:  The Search for Balance in American Political Life, 2nd ed.  More...

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the Director of the Congressional Budget Office, spoke to the Hamilton community April 11, 2005.  Dr. Holtz-Eakin previously served as Chief Economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisors and is Trustee Professor of Economics at the Maxwell School, Syracuse University (Source: Congressional Budget Office).More...

Dinesh D'Souza, Robert and Karen Rishwain Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, spoke on April 20, 2005.  D'Souza was senior domestic policy analyst at the White House during the Reagan Administration from 1987-1988 and is the author of numerous books, including the New York Times bestsellers Illiberal Education (1991) and What's So Great About America (2002).    dineshdsouza.com

 
Alan G. Hevesi, New York State Comptroller, spoke to the Hamilton community on April 27th.  Prior to his election as NYS Comptroller in 2002, Hevesi served as New York City's 41st Comptroller for 9 years.  In addition, he spent 22 years in the State Assembly, 26 years as a faculty member at Queens College, and was also an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School and Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (source: www.osc.state.ny.us)
