Student Assembly MinutesOctober 5, 2009Call to Order: 9:01 p.m. Board of Trustee Committee Reports Meet a total of four times each year and discuss a variety of issues Official minutes will be sent out from the meetings soon The Student Affairs Committee i. Discussed the Cultural Education Center and are planning on coming out with a resolution Committee on Planning focused on a talk by Dave Smallen entitled "Interdependent Futures" i. The future of our school, the Clinton school district, and the towns of Clinton and Kirkland are all intertwined ii. Talked about some of the problems facing the town and how the school has helped iii. Discussed how the Student Assembly is working to get the student body more involved within the town Buildings, Grounds, and Equipment Committee i. Expect the ELS construction project it to be completed by August 2010 ii. The next big project will be the Art Studies, Theater, Gallery and Museum iii. The Library, McEwen and Bristol Renovations are also on the future list Admissions Committee i. Monica Inzer made a presentation that involved statistics of the Class of 2013 and then discussed the emphasis on becoming need-blind ii. Discussed the January Admissions program and its successes iii. Because of the shifting demographics of new high school students, it is expected that more students will be coming to Hamilton from the Southern and Western regions of the United States in the upcoming years Budget Committee i. Looked into how much we are drawing from our endowment as well as faculty pay rates ii. We are always weighing ourselves against comparable schools iii. We must make sure that we don't put things into the budget that will end up costing us more in the future Class of 2010 honorary degrees and speakers will be finalized soon SA Funding Click here to see funding decisions! A cappella groups, some student interest events, and Alternative Spring Break are yet to receive funding decisions Amount remaining for this semester: $48,941.90 Allocated today: $11,105.03 Funding decisions pass unanimously Committee Reports Facilities i. Will meet next Monday at 6:00 in McEwen ii. Suggestion was made to install peepholes in all of the dorm room doors as a response to the break-ins last year 1. Campus Safety estimated the cost of installation to be $14,000 and since Campus Safety doesn't have the funds to support it, they suggested that Student Assembly might want to fund it 2. Student Assembly has not, in the past, funded campus maintenance projects 3. We could discuss this with President Stewart's Office Food i. Met with the woman in charge of the Diner ii. Will be fixing the soft ice cream machine in the Diner within the next 2 weeks iii. Will be getting the lower-percent organic milk in the fridges iv. Will be speaking with the workers about students requesting deli meat in McEwen v. Will get more multigrain bread vi. Have requested that cut fruit be served more often in the Diner vii. Pre-cooking the meat at the stir-fry station is not possible because of the need to install more equipment to keep it warm so will instead look into getting more workers for that station viii. Will get rid of the "neon-colored" ice creams ix. The outlet used for the toasters in Commons is an "industrial" outlet so it will take some time to be able to install more toasters x. Will have the Caesar bar sometimes in Commons instead of the taco bar xi. The Diner has an entirely gluten-free zone, so ask if you need gluten-free preparations Social traditions i. Waiting for a vender to get back regarding a price so will submit the FallFest budget next week ii. Meeting on Wednesday at 8:30 in KJ 101 iii. If any organizations are interested in performing at Fall Fest, please contact Jenn Anderson at jaanders@hamilton.edu Technology i. Talked about making Student Assembly more accessible ii. Will use the paper ballot for recording Student Assembly voting and will then post the records on the Student Assembly website iii. Funding decision votes will also be posted online iv. Class Secretary/Treasurers are responsible for recording the funding decisions of their class v. October movies are up Diversity and Accessibility i. Will meet next Sunday 7:30 ii. Have received funding to help ELS bring the Female Orgasm presentation back to Hamilton this year Student interests i. An all-campus e-mail will be sent out regarding next week's meeting Announcements SA Agenda emailed out before meeting today. Will continue to do this. Meeting adjourned: 9:27 p.m. |
