Hamilton College requires proof of English proficiency for non-native English speaking students. This proficiency can be demonstrated by submitting the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language iBT (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo English Test (DET).

While Hamilton does not have a specific score requirement for these English-proficiency exams, we recommend a minimum score of 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL exam, an overall band score of 7.0 for the IELTS, or a score of 130 on the DET for applicants to be competitive for admission. Please note, Hamilton does not accept ‘super scoring’ from any English language proficiency test, including the TOEFL MyBest score.

In order to ensure students are not penalized by a lack of available testing dates or opportunities, Hamilton will also accept the TOEFL Home Edition. Please note, Hamilton will not grant requests for fee waivers for proficiency exams to any applicants or inquiries.

Official scores (from a testing agency or high school official) must be submitted to complete your application, and self-reported scores will not fulfill our requirement. Students may also demonstrate English proficiency through their studies at a secondary school where English is the primary medium of instruction.

Applicants who would like to request a waiver for our proof of English proficiency requirement are able to do so via a form found on the checklist in their applicant portal. The Admission Office reserves the right to request proof of English proficiency at any time during the application process.
