Diversity at Hamilton

A diversity of cultures, ideas and activities permeates every aspect of the Hamilton community.  The College encourages respect for intellectual and cultural diversity because such respect promotes free and open inquiry, independent thought and mutual understanding.

Hamilton makes many committed efforts to increase the diverse nature of the campus community, including:
  • nearly 50 areas of study, including Africana Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, East Asian Languages and Literature, and World Politics/International Relations;
  • a variety of extracurricular activities and more than 100 clubs and organizations that foster knowledge of our world and its people, including the Asian Cultural Society, the Black and Latin Student Union, the International Students Association, the Middle East Union, the Native American Studies and Students Association, the Rainbow Alliance, the West Indian and African Association, and the Womyn's Center;
  • noteworthy guests to campus who represent diverse interests and backgrounds, such as entertainer Bill Cosby, musician Talib Kweli, producer and activist Russell Simmons, Bishop Desmond Tutu, former president Jimmy Carter, scholar and activist Cornel West, poet Nikki Giovanni, author Ha Jin, musician B.B. King, author Elie Wiesel, General Colin Powell, musical group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, historian Julian Bond, musical group Run DMC, and music and dance troupe Wofa;
  • several opportunities to participate in off-campus study, with programs in China, Washington, D.C., New York City, France, and many others;
  • annual conferences and programs focused on cultural and ethnic identity, including the Men and Women of  Color Conferences, Hispanic Awareness Week, Black History Month, Asian Awareness Week, Culturefest, Celebrate Sexuality Week and Womyn's Energy Week;
  • opportunities for dynamic intellectual discussion, interaction and exchange of ideas about gender, race, class and sexuality through workshops, lectures and programs, including those sponsored by The Diversity and Social Justice Project;
  • and, career connections to a diverse alumni community, including the Black and Latin Alumni Network.
