To encourage alumni to keep Hamilton high on their list of organizations most worthy of financial support, the trustees issued the Power of Many Challenge last fall. With a $250,000 "dollar-for-dollar" incentive, the message was clear — every gift, no matter its size, can make a lasting impact when combined with others. It was in this spirit, and with a sense of shared commitment to today's students and professors, that 2,169 donors responded by Dec. 31, 2009, with $331,666. Few colleges can take their place alongside Hamilton with such unswerving alumni dedication.

Colgate University suggested that a school named after Alexander Hamilton would be ill-advised to pursue a duel with anyone. Undaunted, Hamilton College issued a challenge to Colgate to determine which school could record the most donors in the month of April. So, for 30 days last spring, Hamilton and Colgate vigorously reached out to alumni who had not yet contributed to their respective alma maters. Hamilton frequently found itself trailing; however, when the Chapel bells tolled midnight on April 30 and both schools had scrambled to count those "11th-hour donors," Hamilton emerged victorious with 1,311 donors to Colgate's 1,289.

Hamilton achieved an Annual Fund record in 2008-09, with unrestricted gifts from alumni, parents and other sources totaling more than $6 million. A key factor in this success is the generosity of alumni from the Classes of 1944 to 2004 who celebrated five-year reunions. While accounting for 18 percent of Hamilton's solicitable base, these alumni contributed a full 25 percent of Annual Fund dollars. More...

Hamilton's GOLD alumni — Graduates of the Last Decade — give back much more to the College than financial resources. A donation from a young graduate is a powerful statement about the value of a Hamilton education. GOLD alumni who stay connected with Hamilton form a powerful network and continue the long tradition of alumni engagement.

The College commends the hundreds of volunteers who went "above and beyond" this year on behalf of the Annual Fund. An extra-special thank-you goes to these outstanding achievements.

A dedicated crew of 35 student callers took to the phones in 2008-09, connecting 4,000 alumni and 3,100 parents to the Hill. This year's phonathon was one of the most successful on record, raising $577,000 and providing 28 percent of the Annual Fund's overall alumni participation. In addition to encouraging financial support for the College, student callers used the conversation to share their Hamilton experiences — especially with those who are not able to come back to campus. Whether it's chatting about favorite professors or the latest campus events, students enjoy making direct and personal connections.

From London to San Francisco, and from Seattle to Wilmington, more than 1,000 alumni, parents and friends gathered in 30 locations across the globe to celebrate the birthday of our College's namesake during the second week of January. Events featured Alexander Hamilton impersonators, trivia contests, the time-honored birthday cake and Alumni College discussions about "our" great statesman, philosopher, economist, military leader and, most importantly, College trustee. These annual programs would not be possible without the dedication of alumni volunteers and hosts, and our Alumni Association, whose members collectively support these gathering with their attendance and warmth.

Giving back to our communities is a Hamiltonian hallmark and one which is especially evident with the current generation of students. To commemorate its senior year, the Class of 2009 voted overwhelmingly to establish a prize scholarship to celebrate students who perform "significant and substantial community service in and around the Clinton, N.Y., area."
