Kirkland Update, Fall 2008Dear Fellow Kirkland Alumnae, The first weekend in October provided an opportunity for a good number of Kirkland women to make the trek to the Hill to kick off some new Kirkland initiatives, and to participate in Hamilton Alumni Council Activities. Archives, Media and Publications CommitteeHeaded by Judy Silverstein Gray K'78 and Jennie Morris K'72, this sub-committee of our Committee for Kirkland College held its initial meeting during Fallcoming weekend. The objective is to obtain an understanding of what constitutes the Kirkland Archives; ensure its contents are properly preserved; and make them accessible and user-friendly. The committee intends to augment the collection by soliciting specific gifts of physical items, imagery and media once inventory is completed. In the future, interviews with a wide array of Kirkland alumnae, professors, and friends will be conducted to help to preserve our collective history with as much depth and flavor as possible. Other projects in a variety of media as well as funding mechanisms will be under consideration as well.Kirkland Mentoring CommitteeHeaded by Susie Hartman K'74, the Kirkland Mentoring Committee held its inaugural event, a mentoring brunch for current Hamilton students, which was very well attended. With collaboration by the Womyn's Center and the Hamilton Career Center, this Committee is compiling bios of Kirkland alumnae who are willing to serve as mentors on myriad levels, to current students and young alums.Kirkland Physical PlantThe large addition to K-J has been completed, and it is impressive. The architecture integrates very well with the existing structures; the classrooms are state-of-the-art in every respect; and there is a large lounge area (the "K-J Commons") for the students, complete with a modernist waterfall. The magnificent Kirkland Arch has been reinstalled with thought and care, in the prominent site in front of the new K-J addition, front and center when making the walking approach from the Beinecke Student Center. The kitchens in Milbank and Babbitt have been fully renovated. Nascent plans for the new Arts Facilities, encompassing new studio space, a theatre and a gallery, are being carefully drawn, and one or more new buildings are in the works for the Kirkland campus, on the right side as you drive in the entrance. Kirkland Participation on the Hamilton Alumni CouncilThe Executive Committee of the Alumni Council has approved in principle Kirkland's request for non-class-specific representation on the Council. This would mean that your seven volunteer "Class Agents" would not be delineated by class; nor would your seven elected "Class Presidents".The Committee for Kirkland College is hammering out the language of the new job descriptions, as well as the mechanics of holding a Kirkland-wide election for the seven "Class President" jobs to be filled, and we expect to gain full Alumni Council approval over Volunteer Weekend (April 3-5, 2009). Subsequently, we will solicit nominations and hold an election electronically (on paper as necessary) in the late spring or over the summer. 40 Years of Women's Education on the HillThe Committee for Kirkland College has been asked to fashion a program to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the arrival of women students on the Hill. We expect to hold this program over Volunteer Weekend (April 3-5, 2009).Hamilton's Bicentennial - 2012The history of Hamilton College would not be complete without a discussion of Kirkland. We are working with Hamilton to ensure that the Kirkland portion of this significant anniversary is rendered with accuracy, sensitivity and care.Annual Fund/Kirkland InitiativesThe commitment of Kirkland alumnae has been funneled into many exciting projects on the Hill ranging from our mentoring program to organization of the Kirkland Archives. The synergy is growing stronger as evidenced by involvement with current students, creating a connection amongst an array of those representing three decades of women on the Hill. We are happy to report the Kirkland College legacy has become a very strong piece of the Hamilton College story, due in no small part to our classmates. The new fiscal year is upon us (July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009), and with that we must renew our call for gifts from the Kirkland Community to the Annual Fund and/or the numerous Kirkland Initiatives. Everyone is feeling the impact of the current economic downturn, and Hamilton and its students are no exception. We are deeply grateful to those who gave last year: your unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund provide much in the way of financial aid for students, in addition to helping with general operating expenses. And your gifts to the Kirkland Initiatives, not only enrich those Kirkland-specific funds, but also help to preserve and strengthen the Kirkland Legacy at Hamilton today. If you have any thoughts, questions, concerns or comments, please don't hesitate to be in touch with any one of us. And if you would like to learn more about the programs and initiatives outlined above, or volunteer, we would also love to hear from you! Your Kirkland Gift Chairs, Tami J.
