STOP - Starting Today Others Pay

View slideshow

On February 23, Hamilton celebrated STOP — Starting Today Others Pay — the day when the cost of operating the College for the remainder of the academic year is paid not by tuition and fees, but by income from gifts provided by alumni, parents and friends.

Income from tuition, room and board provides two-thirds of the cost of a Hamilton education. The difference is made up by Annual Fund gifts and income from the endowment. Consider the following illustrative examples:

  • Opportunities abound for the College’s 1,812 students to pursue 50 courses of study, play on 28 varsity athletic teams and participate in more than 100 clubs and activities outside the classroom. Without the support of others, reduce these numbers by 33 percent.
  • Annual endowment support is equivalent to the entire student financial aid budget or two-thirds of the salaries for all Hamilton employees or salaries and benefits for all Hamilton faculty
  • Without Annual Fund contributions, a 9:1 student faculty ratio becomes 13:1, significantly impacting class size, research opportunities and close interactions in and out of the classroom
  • Donors invest in students as they prepare themselves for life after Hamilton. Last summer alone, more than 170 students received funding for internships or academic research projects.

To mark STOP, blue stop signs are displayed throughout campus featuring facts about the impact of philanthropy. Students had the opportunity to hear a presentation by Karen Leach, vice president for administration and finance, about the College's budget and write thank-y0u notes to donors.

Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu took questions at the day's opening presentation.
