Second Sunday in Advent
"This will be a sign for you..."
The Signs of Christmas
As the song says "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas". For us folks in the northeast of America, what are the signs of Christmas?
* Snow that is "for real" and won't be leaving until May?
* Lights. Lots and lots of red and green lights?
* 24 hour Christmas Carols on the radio?
* Salvation Army bell ringers?
* Stressed out shoppers?
* Final exams?
Some of these "signs" are not so pleasant and certainly don't appear to help us prepare for the coming of our Savior. How would we decipher from any of these "signs" that our King is coming? Here's one of God's blessings for us: we don't have to. We don't need to be Wise Men, we don't have to navigate using a star or have a host of angels point us in the right direction. God has made it easy for us: we are blessed with the knowledge that year after year, Christmas after Christmas, Jesus will be there. All we have to do is look.
As we prepare for this Christmas, if some of the "signs" of Christmas have got you down, my suggestion is to ask a child where you can find Jesus. I think the answer will be enlightening and if you're really
lucky you may be treated to a rousing elementary school chorus version of "Away in the Manger".
