Dear Hillel Family Members,
We hope you're having a great fall. As the officers and adviser of Hamilton College Hillel, we are writing to keep you informed of our activities throughout the High Holy Days season and on throughout the semester. We have had an exciting seven weeks back on the Hill, and we are hoping to share our experiences with you and hear your input on Jewish life at Hamilton.
We would first like to tell you about all the great events we held surrounding the High Holy Days. We had two fantastic days of Rosh Hashana, opened by a dinner attended by 48 students and followed by evening services and a discussion on faith in the Little Pub with the Rabbi. We held services and other activities throughout the first and second day of Rosh Hashana. Yom Kippur began with a meal before the fast, with a Kol Nidre service afterwards. We had services in the morning, followed by a Yizkor service. We reconvened for a discussion group in the afternoon, then held evening services and broke the fast.
The next week brought Sukkot, and we enjoyed Israeli music and Cider Mill donuts and cider in our Sukkah. Friday, October 8, we held a Shabbat service in Commons, one of the dining halls on campus. Going forward, we are looking forward to two exciting Family Weekend events. We are holding another Shabbat service and dinner the Friday of Family Weekend, October 29. On Sunday the 31st, before parents depart the Hill, we will hold a bagel brunch.
We have a number of other events planned for the end of the semester. Our last Shabbat will take place on November 12. Later in the semester, we are holding a Late Night "Bar/Bat Mitzvah" event. Late Nights are designed to provide something to do on Friday nights that does not include alcohol. Ours will have a DJ and party games like Coke and Pepsi.
One of the important ideas that drives the Jewish community at Hamilton is the understanding that the community stretches beyond College Hill or the 13323 zip code. Family, alumni, and faculty reach all over the country (and, in a few cases, the world). It's important that Hillel stays connected to everyone involved in shaping Jewish life at Hamilton.
If you have any ideas on how to make Jewish life at Hamilton better or more interesting, we would love to hear from you. We invite you to get involved with expanding Hillel on campus (and off) in any way you can. And if you have any questions or concerns about Jewish life, we're very happy to listen to and answer those as best we can.
Have a good fall!
