Emergency Planning & Preparedness

Hamilton College routinely operates in a manner which avoids emergencies. However, the College is not immune to critical incidents, and strives to plan and prepare for them through written plans and protocols, training, effective communication strategies, and regular meetings of the Hamilton Emergency Response Team (HERT).  The members of the HERT steering group are:

  • Meredith Bonham (Co-Chair), Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Board of Trustees
  • Fran Manfredo (Co-Chair), Director of Campus Safety
  • Steve Bellona, Associate Vice President for Facilities & Planning
  • Mike Debraggio, Executive Director of Communications
  • Brian Hansen, Director of Environmental Protection, Safety & Sustainability
  • Karen Leach, Vice President for Administration & Finance
  • Dave Smallen, Vice President for Information Technology
  • Steve Stemkoski, Director of Human Resources
  • Nancy Thompson, Dean of Students
Campus Safety officers, Physical Plant staff, and Hamilton College Emergency Medical Staff (HCEMS) will, in most cases, respond aggressively and immediately to emergencies. Building Coordinators (in academic/administrative facilities) and Resident Advisors are also important to the College's emergency planning and preparedness efforts in their ability to disseminate information quickly. Finally, Hamilton relies on the expertise of our local emergency professionals and law enforcement agencies.

When you witness an emergency event, the most important thing to do is to call one of the emergency numbers listed here: http://my.hamilton.edu/college/safety/emergency.html. All members of the College community are also encouraged to review the information contained in the links below as a means of becoming more familiar with your own roles and responsibilities.
