Dislocating the Center:
Contemporary Chinese Art
Beyond National Borders

Dislocating the Center: Contemporary Chinese Art Beyond National Borders brings together three international artists whose works compel us to reconsider the ways in which we understand contemporary Chinese art in terms of the cultural dynamics of globalization. American photographer Michael Cherney, Chinese-American painter Arnold Chang, and French calligrapher André Kneib work in styles and formats traditionally reserved for Chinese painting and calligraphy. According to the exhibition's co-curator Steven J. Goldberg, Associate Professor of Art History, "Michael Cherney's photographic album leaves and handscrolls, Arnold Chang's landscape paintings, and André Kneib's calligraphy offer us an opportunity to reach a new understanding of contemporary Chinese art as transnational and global projects that transcend both ethic identity and national borders.
