General Information

The objective of our internship program is to provide employment with positive work/training experience to supplement and enhance the education students receive in the classroom. Interns receive project-focused assignments and challenging objectives consistent with their career goals.

Interns will receive a broad orientation to Hamilton College, learn how the different teams in ITS work together, and learn how the Network and Telecommunications Services team functions. Developmental opportunities may include meetings with outside vendors, various educational workshops, and working with other departments at the College.

Criteria and Requirements

Students who are interested in applying for an Internship with Network and Telecommunications Services should be enrolled in a Telecommunications, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or another Information Technology program. Applicants should have at least one year of relevant experience in Information Technology. Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills, be fast learners, and have the ability to work independently and in group projects. Applicants must be comfortable working with the Microsoft Office Suite, Windows XP/2000/2003 Operating Systems, and have general knowledge of TCP/IP networking. Programming, Macintosh, and UNIX/Linux skills are also beneficial, but not required.

Two full-time Internships (35 hours/week) are available each summer. The hourly rate for a summer internship is $9.00/hour. This is non-negotiable. Summer Internship positions will begin in mid-May and be completed at the end of August. Interns are required to work Monday thru Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm with the exception of Memorial Day and Independence Day (July 4th). There is no paid vacation or any other benefits (health insurance, etc.). If other time away from the office is required, interns can request time off as appropriate.

Two part-time Internships are available during the fall and spring semester. The Internships are from 10 to 20 hours/week at a maximum. The hourly rate for a fall/spring internship is $9/hour. This is non-negotiable. The start and end dates, and schedules for these internships vary, but the intern must work their hours between Monday and Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Interns are required to have their own housing and transportation. Hamilton College does provide summer housing, but it is not available until June and ends in mid-August. If you do consider living at Hamilton during the summer, you are still required to provide your own housing during the May and August time periods. Housing at Hamilton is only available in the summer.

The dress code for all internship positions is casual. Interns are allowed to wear jeans (and some days when working in hot buildings, interns can wear shorts). However, interns must remember they should look presentable, so no torn clothing, dirty clothing, or clothing with slogans should be worn.

Evaluations for SUNY IT students will be done in accordance with SUNY Utica/Rome guidelines. Evaluations for Hamilton students will be done at least once per year. Upon successful completion of an internship, the intern will receive a reference letter and will be allowed to use Network & Telecommunications Services team members as references for future job opportunities.
