Phishing

Phishing is an internet variation of the sport fishing. In phishing, spoofed e-mails and fraudulent websites are used as bait to fool internet users to divulge personal information. This information includes personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers, PIN's, etc. Phishing websites and e-mails hijack trusted brand names of well known financial institutions, online retailers and credit card companies. Phishers are able to convince up to 5% of the recipients to divulge their personal information.

Avoiding the Phishing hook

Beware of e-mails and websites that:
  • Ask for personal information such as your credit card number, PIN number, bank account number, an account password, mother's maiden name, or social security number.
  • Use generic salutation such as "Dear Customer" or your e-mail address rather than address you by your name. E-mails from financial institution are personalized.
  • Fail to confirm the company does business with you, such as referencing a partial account number.
  • Warn you that your account will be shut down unless you reconfirm your financial information.
  • Warn that you have been the victim of fraud.
  • Have spelling or grammatical errors.
