What does full network downtime mean?

The following services are also unavailable from on-campus and off-campus:

  • Hamilton Web sites (my.hamilton.edu, mail.hamilton.edu, etc.)
  • Datatel (Colleague/Benefactor)

  • WebAdvisor
  • Employee Storage Server (ESS)
  • Student Storage Server (SSS)
  • Library Services
  • All department servers which ITS Supports like Filemaker, CBORD, Kronos, SecureCheck, etc.
  • Printing to department printers
  • ITS Lab network access and printing

What does building downtime mean?

When a building is scheduled for network downtime, this means any computer in that building will be unable to access the services above during the specified time period.
No computers on-campus or off-campus will be able to access computers or printers in the building where the network is unavailable.
All other computers on-campus which are not located in the specified building and off-campus computers can access the services above.

What will happen if someone attempts to send an electronic mail message from off-campus to our e-mail system when it is unavailable?

If someone attempts to send you e-mail from off-campus, the message will typically get queued on the external mail system until our mail server becomes available.  Once our mail server is back in service, off-campus mail systems will start to deliver mail to our server.
Some mail systems will not queue messages when our mail server is unavailable.  In this case, the sender will get a "bounced" mail message delivered back to them saying the message is undeliverable.  The user will need to resend the message when our mail server becomes available.

Will the phone system be available during network downtime?

All phones will be available during any network downtime.  The phone system and network are two seperate systems.  The phone system operates on generator power during a power outage which enables it to provide service in the event of a power outage.
