What is e-Learning?

In today's rapidly evolving, information-based world, e-Learning provides a convenient and flexible online training environment for those interesting in enhancing their skills. Whether you are simply pursuing a hobby or intend to apply new skills to scholastics or the work place, e-Learning is the quickest and easiest method for achieving your goals. Here's why:

Convenient
- You can engage in online training from any internet-ready computer at anytime of the day and week.

Cost Effective
- Compared with the cost of attending conventional classes, e-Learning is far less expensive.

Customizable
- With e-Learning, you can choose the material and courses that are important to you. In this way, you learn the skills you want or need without the hassle of dealing with excess information.

Variety
- Literally thousands of courses on a myriad of subjects can be explored and taken advantage of with e-Learning.

What are my e-Learning options at Hamilton?

ITS purchased access to topical libraries, Office Productivity and Design and Media, from Element K, an online training resource which provides hundreds of self-paced technology classes to a world wide community. Hamilton's accounts do not include access to the on-line instructor led classes.

As a Hamilton student or employee, you can request one of the 200 accounts at no additional cost to you. With this account, you can begin your own personal e-Learning experience here at Hamilton College.

What is Element K?

Element K is an excellent online training resource. By utilizing Element K's fast and easy QuickSkill courses, you can become proficient in computational areas as diverse as Microsoft Word, HTML programming, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Flash. These tutorials and all of Element K's courses are self-paced, giving you the flexibility to learn new material at a rate that suits your schedule. You can become a Microsoft Excel expert overnight or take a few weeks to let it all sink in. With Element K, it's up to you.

What does my computer need to run Element K?

The system requirements for utilizing Element K are pretty basic and most people should not have a problem running the tutorials on their computers. However, just to avoid problems, we have included a list of the components your computer should have in order to run Element K smoothly.

Platform: Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, or XP or Mac OS 8.5 +
Browser: Netscape 4.5 +, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 +, AOL 5.0 +
Browser Plug-in: Macromedia Flash Player
Internet Access: 28.8 kbps modem or faster
Internet Settings: Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.
Resolution: 800x600 @ 256 colors +

Note: A (+) after a product means that both the indicated version and any newer version will be sufficient for running Element K.

As indicated above, you will need to download the Macromedia Flash Player in order to run the Element K QuickSkill courses. You can download this program for free.

How do I get started?

Getting started with Element K is as simple as sending an filling out the following form. Be sure to properly fill out all fields with the appropriate information.

Once we obtain your form entry with the preceding information enclosed, we will create an Element K account for you and send you an e-mail with your username and password. To access your Element K account, simply go to Element K's Web site and enter your username and password.
