Assistant Cataloger

The Assistant Cataloger works under the general supervision of the Catalog Librarian applying national cataloging standards to the description of library materials in order to ensure a high level of discoverability in the Hamilton College Library on-line catalog.  

Responsibilities:

a. Performs copy cataloging of monographic library materials, including audio-visual, electronic and special collections resources; and materials in foreign languages. Identifies and evaluates bibliographic records found in an international bibliographic database (OCLC). Edits records as necessary to conform to national standards and local practices, and correct errors. Assigns call numbers and subject headings as necessary.

b. Assists in maintaining authority control over name, series and subject headings in the Hamilton College Library catalog. Analyzes and solves headings problems and conflicts. 

c. Contributes to quality control of the Hamilton College catalog and OCLC: identifies and corrects errors in bibliographic and authority records; submits error reports to OCLC when appropriate. 

d. Performs original cataloging under the supervision of the Catalog Librarian: creates bibliographic records according to national standards and local practice; submits records to OCLC to be shared with and used by other libraries.

e. Maintains current knowledge of tools necessary to perform above responsibilities, for example: Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress subject headings and classification system; MARC (machine readable cataloging) formats; OCLC system documentation; Hamilton’s integrated library system (Voyager). Follows emerging metadata standards, World Wide Web tools and resources for cataloging.

f. May assist with the pre-order searching, ordering and cataloging of monographic materials on receipt.

A bachelor’s degree is required and successful experience in library technical services is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered; reading knowledge of a foreign language is desirable. Individuals must have the ability to understand and interpret complex cataloging standards, analyze problems and formulate solutions; work comfortably with multiple databases including OCLC, Voyager, vendor systems, and internet resources; do accurate and detailed work with minimal supervision after initial training; and work as a team member.
