Cram and Scram Reuse Program

In May, the Recycling Task Force began the first annual Cram and Scram Reuse Program.  Twenty-six student volunteers, led by Ashley Langer '09, collected recyclables and reusable materials, reducing waste by 28 percent.

Volunteers collected:
  • 8.83 tons of books,
  • 7.84 tons of paper group recycling, and
  • 4.30 tons of container group recycling, which were sent to the Oneida-Herkimer Recycling Center.
  • 1169 pounds of kitchen items and toys and 2181 pounds of clothing went to the Salvation Army
  • 1271 pounds of bedding went to the Steven Swan Humane Society
  • 642 pounds of food went to the Clark's Mills Food Pantry
  • Three tractor-trailer loads of dorm furnishings and electronics, including futons, rugs, refrigerators, microwaves, lamps, shelving, chairs, kitchen supplies, and couches, were stored over the summer.
On August 26 -27, Recycling Task Force Volunteers sold the dorm furnishings to incoming students in the first Cram and Scram sale, which took place in North Lot from 10-4 each day.  The sale was a huge success and we look forward to making this an annual event!

FACT:

  • Hamilton pays $72.15 for every ton of garbage we produce in the community, but disposing of recyclables is free.  Please recycle!

UPDATE:

  • Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has recently changed its recycling guidelines and no longer accepts plastic #6, which includes Styrofoam containers, Solo cups, most plastic cups, and Opus cups.

TIPS:

  • The container group includes plastics #1-5 (look on the bottom of most containers for the recycling symbol).
  • Cups from McEwen and the Diner are not recyclable!  Commons cups (only the ones that have "Bon Appetit" on the side) are recyclable if they are rinsed out.
  • Use the blue bin in your room or office to make recycling easier.
  • Use a travel mug or water bottle instead of paper cups.
