Current Projects


Cram and Scram

In May 2008, the Recycling Task Force began the first annual Cram and Scram Reuse Program.  Recycling Task Force volunteers held a sale of collected dorm furnishings, electronics, kitchen supplies, and school supplies in late August 2008.  The sale went amazingly well, as nearly everything was sold and there were many satisfied customers.  For more information, please click here.

Plastic Bag Recycling

Hamilton has begun a partnership with Hannaford Supermarket in Clinton to recycle plastic bags and wraps from students, faculty, staff, and the athletic department.  Watch for a plastic bag recycling bin coming soon.

Programs in the Works

Additionally, the Recycling Task Force is working on a number of other projects to improve recycling rates and increase recycling education on the Hamilton campus. 
  • Sneaker recycling program
  • Composting
  • Outdoor recycling containers
  • Inter-dorm recycling competition
  • Recycling bin lids for dorms
  • Mini "Cram and Scram" in December to collect clothing and unopened food for donation

FACT:

  • Hamilton pays $72.15 for every ton of garbage we produce in the community, but disposing of recyclables is free.  Please recycle!

UPDATE:

  • Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has recently changed its recycling guidelines and no longer accepts plastic #6, which includes Styrofoam containers, Solo cups, most plastic cups, and Opus cups. 

TIPS:

  • The container group includes plastics #1-5 (look on the bottom of most containers for the recycling symbol).
  • Cups from McEwen and the Diner are not recyclable!  Commons cups (only the ones that have "Bon Appetit" on the side) are recyclable if they are rinsed out.
  • Use the blue bin in your room or office to make recycling easier.
  • Use a travel mug or water bottle instead of paper cups.
