2009 Summer Construction Projects

Benedict Hall – We will be doing work to improve the thermal envelope of the building, replace the front steps, install a new heating system, and modify a classroom on the second floor such that film may be shown in the room. Thermally, we will be installing new insulation in the attic, replacing all the windows and pointing the exterior stone. Additionally, the entrance arch will be restored.

McEwen Dining Hall – We will be replacing the dishwasher and providing support to Bon Appetite for modifying the serving line.

Alumni Gym – We will be replacing the glass in the sashes around the building. You'll note that many of the window seals have been broken, allowing moisture to penetrate into the insulated units.

Bristol Center – The sitting wall around the patio area will be re-pointed, and the capstones repaired/replaced. The patios will receive a new waterproof membrane. The pointing work will begin on Monday, 11 May.

Chapel – New carpet will be installed on the first floor, and the steeple will be repainted.

Commons Dining Hall – The kitchen area was last renovated in 1998, and requires minor upgrades. These include new flooring, walls repairs and painting. We will also replace the carpet in the eating area overlooking Martin's Way.

Dunham Residence Hall
– The last of the old asbestos floor tile will be removed this summer. The first floor tile replacement will begin after reunions and be completed around the first of July.

Eells Residence Hall – Repairs to the domestic water lines in the building will be completed this summer.

Martin's Way Completion and Demolition of North/South Courts – Following reunion weekend, we will begin removal of the two court buildings between Dunham and Commons. These Courts were originally constructed in 1935 to house Physical Plant, and have served a number of functions over the past 74 years. We expect to make this into a new quadrangle and open grass field to support college events and student activities. During the removal, we will be relocating electrical services, mitigating storm water discharge, and modifying the paths. The building stone will be salvaged for reuse.

Babbitt and Milbank Residence Halls – We will be making improvements to the fire sprinkler systems in these two buildings this summer.

Bristol Pool – The pool tile in the shallow end has started to separate from the concrete sub-base. Draining of the pool will begin this coming weekend, and work to replace the top four feet of tile will begin on Monday morning, 11 May. We expect this work to be completed by the first week of July.

Skenandoa House – The roof over the porch area was damage this past winter from falling ice and will be replaced. Work will begin in June.

Anderson Road Water Line – The water service to Anderson Road is nearing the end of its service life. Work to replace the line will begin on 10 June and take approximately two weeks for the contractor to complete the replacement, and ground repairs.

Old High Voltage Electrical Service – The old 13.2kv switchgear behind the Little Pub and Science Building will be removed this summer. Work is scheduled to start on 15 June and be complete by 17 June.

List Art Center – New senior studios will be created, and minor renovations to the mechanical system are to be completed prior to the start of the fall semester.

Woollcott Residence Hall
– A full renovation of the kitchen is scheduled to begin in June.

Major, Minor and McIntosh Residence Halls – We are continuing with upgrading the bathrooms and kitchenettes in the south campus residence halls. The remaining residence halls – Root and Keehn – are scheduled for completion next summer.

Warning Sirens – Installation of three sirens for emergency notifications will be installed. They will be located on Schaumbach, Burke Library and on a pole between Wally J. and Bristol Center.
