International Student Services

New Student Orientation 2014

Unless you will participate in Adirondack Adventure or Outreach Adventure, plan to arrive on Thursday, August 22nd.   Notify us of your travel plans in advance and we will arrange transportation from the Syracuse airport or Utica train/bus depot.  If you are driving to campus, plan to arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the Dean of Students Office is open (someone from our office will greet you and show you to your room, the dining hall, etc.).

If you must arrive earlier than August 22nd plan to stay at a Syracuse airport hotel (see the Syracuse Airport Hotel Guide for multiple listings) or local hotel near the College.  For a list of local accommodations, visit https://my.hamilton.edu/admission/visiting/accommodations. 


Important dates

Tuesday, July 15, 2014: Deadline to notify our office of your travel plans. 

Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Earliest date to arrive in the U.S.  You may not enter the U.S. more than 30 days in advance of the report date on your I-20.

Wednesday, August 13, 2014: Earliest date to arrive on campus if you plan to participate in pre-orientation programs (Adirondack Adventure, Exploration Adventure or Outreach Adventure). 

Thursday, August 21, 2014: Earliest date to arrive on campus if you do not plan to participate in pre-orientation.  Dean of Students Office Hours: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Friday, August 22, 2014: AT&T representative available to purchase cell phones. 1:30pm, Kirner Johnson, Room 104.   At 3pm, at the Kirner Johnson circle, we will have a van shuttling students to the local mall for a shopping trip.

Saturday, August 23, 2014: New F1 international Students Welcome Breakfast. 9:30am, Dwight Lounge, Bristol Center.  

Saturday, August 23, 2014, 11:30am:  One Stop Shop -- Essential Campus Services, Kirner Johnson Commons.  Local banks will be available to setup accounts.

Also, all new students arrive for the general orientation program.  Beginning at 1:30 p.m., you should follow the Hamilton New Student Orientation Schedule (join orientation group for first program; the President’s Welcome at Wellin Hall, Schambach Center).

Through Wednesday, August 27th, students will follow the general orientation schedule.  Information about international student orientation is listed below.

Tuesday, August 26, 2014, 9:15pm:  MP2 (Multicultural Peer Mentoring Project) Welcome Reception.  For international students who signed on during the summer to participate in the Project.  Days-Massolo Center.

Thursday, August 28, 2014, 4:00pm:  Mandatory new F1 international student meeting (bring your passport, visa, I-20, etc.).  Elihu Root House Lobby

Friday, August 29, 2014, Dwight Lounge, Bristol Center

  • 5:30pm  Dinner
  • 6:00pm  Session I:  Navigating the American College Classroom:  Honor Code, Plagiarism, etc.  (Stephen Orvis, Associate Dean of Students, Academics and Professor of Government).

  • 7:00pm  Session II:  Hamilton's Student Judicial Process (Jeff Landry, Associate Dean of Students for Health and Safety)

  • 7:55pm  Session III:  English for Speaker of Other Languages (ESOL) Courses (Britt Hysell, Coordinator of the ESOL Program)

Sunday, August 31st, 2014, 6pm:  International Friendship Program (IFP) cookout.  Students will meet their IFP hosts and enjoy a traditional American cookout. All international students – both those with and those without IFP hosts – are welcome. The Hub at Bristol Campus Center.

  • 4:15pm  Session IV:  Employment Forms (Mike Thayer, Employment Manager); Applying for a Social Security Card (Allen Harrison, Associate Dean of Students for Multicultural Affairs and Accessibility Services); and Creating an Individual Record for Income Tax Purposes (GLACIER) (Erika Mumford, Payroll and Accounts Payable Manager).
