New Student Orientation 2016

First year international students should plan to arrive no earlier than Sunday, August 14, 2016. If you must arrive earlier than August 14, plan to stay at a Syracuse airport hotel (see the Syracuse Airport Hotel Guide for multiple listings) or local hotel near the College (see accommodations).

Important dates

Late May 2016:  Expect to receive your I-20 no earlier than this!

Wednesday, June 1, 2016:  Earliest date to apply for your F-1 Visa.

Friday, July 15, 2016:  Deadline to notify our office of your travel plans.  Please complete this travel form.

Friday, July 15, 2016:  Earliest date to arrive in the U.S.  You may not enter the U.S. more that 30 days in advance of the report date on your I-20.

Saturday and Sunday, August 13 & 14, 2016: Earliest date to arrive on campus for Orientation.  If you must arrive later, then contact our office immediately.

Monday, August 15, 2016:  MANDATORY international student orientation begins.

  • 9:00AM   New F-1 International Students Welcome Breakfast--Dwight Lounge, Bristol Center
  • 10:45AM  Campus Tour.  Admissions, Suida House 
  • 12:00PM  Lunch at Commons
  • 1:30PM    Mandatory New F-1 International Student Meeting (bring your passport, visa, I-20, etc.)--Elihu Root House Lobby
  • 3:00PM   Break     
  • 3:15PM    Session I: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Courses (Britt Hysell, Director of the ESOL Program) (Dwight Lounge, Bristol Center)
  • 4:15PM    Break
  • 4:30PM    Q&A Session and Wrap Up
  • 5:15PM     Dinner at Commons
  • 7:00PM    Shopping Trip (including purchase of cell phones) (Pickup at Sadove Center Circle)

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016:  

  • 8:00AM    Breakfast at Commons
  • 9:00AM    Session II: Student Health Insurance (Health Center Representative) (Kirner-Johnson, Room 102)
  • 10:00AM   One Stop Shop -- Set up Bank Accounts (Kirner-Johnson, 1st Floor Commons)
  • 1:00PM     First-year Student Orientation begins

Monday, August 22, 2016:

8:45PM     MP2 (Multicultural Peer Mentoring Project) Welcome Reception -- Margaret Scott Bundy Fieldhouse. For international students who signed on during the summer to participate in the Project.

Friday, August 26, 2016  Sadove Center Conference Room

  • 4:30PM    Session III: Transitions: Adjusting to Life at Hamilton (TBD, Counseling Center)
  • 5:15PM    Break
  • 5:30PM    Catered Dinner
  • 6:00PM   Session IV: Navigating the American College Classroom: Honor Code, Plagiarism, etc. (Vivyan Adair, Associate Dean of Students for Academics and Associate Professor of Women’s Studies)
  • 6:45PM    Wrap Up

Sunday, August 28, 2016, 6pm:  International Friendship Program (IFP) dinner.  Students will meet their IFP hosts and enjoy a traditional American cookout. All international students – both those with and those without IFP hosts – are welcome. The Hub at Bristol Campus Center.

Wednesday, August 31, 2016, Sadove Center Conference Room

  • 4:15PM   Session V: Finding and Securing an On-Campus Job (TBD, Student Employment Representative and Peer Intern, Career Center)
  • 4:45PM   Break
  • 5:00PM  Session VI: Employment Forms (Mike Thayer, Employment Manager); Applying for a Social Security Card (Allen Harrison, Associate Dean of Students for Multicultural Affairs and Accessibility Services); and Creating an Individual Record for Income Tax Purposes (GLACIER) (Erika Mumford, Payroll and Accounts Payable Manager)
