Reading of Student Creative WritingFamily Weekend 2007This year, in what may become a Family Weekend tradition, the English Department sponsored a reading of prize-winning student work in creative writing. Cafe Opus 2 provided refreshments to the more than 100 audience members as students read aloud selections of their own short prose and poetry in the Science Center Atrium. The students selected to read their work during this event: Katie Naughton '08 and Emily Tang '08, winners of the Thomas E. Meehan Prize in Creative Writing; Christopher Parmenter '10, winner of the Adam Gordon Poetry Prize for Freshmen; Fiona MacQuarrie '09, winner of the Rose B. Tager Prize in Fiction; Rachel Richardson '09, winner of the George A. Watrous Prize in Poetry; and Nicole Dietsche '09, winner of the George A. Watrous Prize in Fiction.Wind Over Wood and RaymondaFamily Weekend 2007 Dance PerformanceHamilton College dance students performed a piece called "Wind Over Wood" composed by Lecturer in Dance Richard Lloyd '73 and choreographed by Associate Professor of Dance Elaine Heekin. The Hamilton students were accompanied by wind ensemble Lavender Trio. In addition, guest artist and choreographer Olivier Wecxsteen, former principal dancer with Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, performed and set a work for Family Weekend with Hamilton student dancers. More ...Summer Research Poster SessionFamily Weekend 2007Parents, students and professors celebrated summer research at Hamilton College by attending a poster session on Friday afternoon of Family Weekend 2007. The science research session was hosted by the Coordinator of Summer Science Research Leslie North. Held in the Science Center Atrium, students presented their summer science research and discussed project designs and results with their professors and families. Also on display were posters by the recipients of the 2007 Levitt Fellowship grants. Recipients of the Levitt Fellowship spent their summer working with a faculty member researching an issue related to public affairs. Root: Teacher, Collector and Naturalist, and the sophomore seminar that was taught in conjunction with the exhibition. More ...Department of Theatre Presents Etta JenksPerformances Through November 17The Hamilton College Department of Theatre will present Marlane Meyer's Etta Jenks as its fall theatre production. Performances are Thursday - Saturday, Nov. 8-10 and Wednesday – Saturday, Nov. 14-17 at 8 p.m., and a matinée on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m., all in Minor Theater. The performance is under the direction of Professor Carole Bellini-Sharp, with lighting design by Bill Burd, costume design by Amy Svoboda and set design by John Pollard. More ...Election PreviewFamily Weekend 2007With the 2008 Election Year approaching fast, students from Professor of Government Theodore Eismeier's American Political Process class gave presentations on the major candidates. The students chose who they wanted to represent and gave presentations on their candidate's political platform. For the Democrats, Anna Scott '11 represented Barack Obama, Lindsay Getman '10, Jacob Kleinrock '11 and Jenna Cohen '10 represented Hilary Clinton, and Tom Yarnell '10 gave his support for John Edwards. The Republicans were represented by Jeff Corbett '09 for Fred Thompson, Frank Matt '10 for Mitt Romney and Ed Ajaeb '11 and Gates Helms '11 for Rudy Giuliani. In their presentations, the students discussed the prospects of their candidates and the hardships each has encountered on their campaign trails. Afterward, the audience engaged in a lively discussion with the students about the prospective candidates and campaign issues important to college students. |
