Information for Prospective Student Participants

Students participate in Project SHINE through a course or as volunteers.  They spend 10-20 hours a semester 'coaching' in an ESOL or citizenship class designed for adult immigrant and refugees.  As a participant, you'll provide a valuable service to the Utica community, but will find that you'll learn as much as you teach.

As a student participant, you'll benefit by...
  •  gaining real life experience that relates to academic courses and makes lectures, readings, and discussions in class more  relevant, and more personal by integrating practice with theory
  • developing an intergenerational relationship
  • learning about a different culture and sharing your own
  • getting off the hill and into neighboring Utica, which has a storied history and a diverse population.
