Peters earned his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1936. After working with Baron von Walterhausen on a geodetic survey of Mount Etna from 1838 until 1843, Peters fought as an artillery officer under Garibaldi in the revolt against the King of Naples. After the failure of the revolt, Peters fled to Malta. He returned to Sicily the following year, but the fall of Palermo caused him to travel to France, then Constantinople. Peters immigrated to the United States in 1852 and began working for the Dudley Observatory in Albany, NY, a position he held until 1858. In 1858, the Hamilton College Board of Trustees offered Peters the directorship of the Litchfield Observatory. With the support of Edwin C. Litchfield '32, Peters became the first member of the Hamilton College faculty with a Ph.D., was named the Litchfield Professor of Astronomy in 1867, and continued to serve the school until his death. During Peters' time at Hamilton, he discovered 47 asteroids from the Litchfield Observatory and, with help from the University of the State of New York, determined the longitude of the western boundary of New York State, as well as the longitude for several cities, including Buffalo, Syracuse, and Elmira. With Peters' death, the Litchfield Observatory fell into disrepair. Class of 1832 Alexander Bryan Johnson was born on 29 May, 1786 in Gosport, England and died in Utica, NY on 9 September, 1867. Johnson came to Utica from England with only a grammar school education in 1801 to join his father's trading business. After establishing a glass factory in Geneva, NY in 1810, Johnson used the capital he had earned to move to New York City to invest in bank stocks and study banking methods. When the fighting of the War of 1812 threatened New York City, Johnson returned to Utica where he married Abigail Louisa Adams, granddaughter of former United States President John Adams in 1814. He served as the manager of the Utica Insurance Company (1815-1819) and was appointed president of the Ontario Bank Branch (1819) before being named director of the Bank of Utica. Johnson took an interest in law and was admitted to the bar in 1833, though he never actively practiced. He was also involved in politics, serving as a delegate to the Baltimore Convention in 1835, the result of which was the re-nomination of Martin Van Buren for president. He was awarded an honorary degree by Hamilton College in 1832. Along with his talent for banking and law, Johnson was a noted philosopher and semanticist. Though his theories were mostly ignored during his lifetime, his work evidences his anticipation of the concerns of modern linguistic philosophy and logical positivism. A prolific writer on all matters that interested him, Johnson published several treatises during his life, including, "The Nature of Value, Capital, etc." (1818); "The Philosophy of Human Knowledge" (1828); "Treatise on Language" (1836); "Religion in Relation to the Present Life" (1840); "The Meaning of Words Analyzed" (1854);" Physiology of the Senses" (1856); "An Encyclopedia of Instruction" (1857); and a "Guide to Right Understanding of our American Union" (1857).Contents Textual records (letters, mss, etc.)Extent 2 file cabinet drawersDescription Correspondence relating to banking and business history of NY and to Johnson's scholarly activities; correspondence and other papers of the Johnson and Adams families, including letters of John Quincy Adams; and Johnson's unpublished autobiographyRestrictions NoneDavis, Henry, Correspondence: 1817 - 1833 (also Treadwell and Maltbie) (0000.184) Biographical Information (1771 - 1852) Clergy and President of Middlebury and Hamilton (1817 - 1833) Colleges Henry Davis was born in East Hampton, NY, on 15 September, 1771 and died in Clinton, NY, on 8 March, 1852. After working as a tutor for Williams College and Yale College, Davis was appointed professor of classics at Union College. In 1806 he became the second president of Middlebury College, a position he held until he agreed to become the second president of Hamilton College in 1816. Davis was an unpopular president. His time at Hamilton College was characterized by continuous struggles between himself and the Board of Trustees that lasted more than ten years and nearly resulted in the collapse of Hamilton. In addition to fulfilling his duties as president of Hamilton, Davis was instrumental in the establishment of the Auburn Theological Seminary in 1818. After Davis resigned his presidency in 1832, he wrote a book on Hamilton's turmoil, "A Narrative of the Embarrassments and Decline of Hamilton College," published in 1833. Davis continued to attempt to impose his ideas on college policies by attending meetings of the Board of Trustees until his death in 1852.Contents Textual records (letters, mss, etc.)Extent 1 drawerDescription Correspondence relating to H.C. affairs; related collection in same drawer includes Thomas Treadwell papers, Maltbie family papers, and an original "Constitution of the State of New York" April 22, 1777Restrictions NoneCivil War Letters Collection: William H.
