Volunteer of the Year Steve Anthony '59
Volunteer Excellence
Fittingly honored the same weekend that Hamilton's new Science Center
was dedicated, Steve Anthony '59 was named Volunteer of the Year for
2005.
Elected to the board of trustees in 1988, Anthony has chaired the
budget and finance committee and currently heads the committee on
buildings, grounds and equipment. He was involved with the construction
of the new Science Center -- from inception to completion -- and chaired
the subcommittee on the building's design. In addition to monitoring
the largest construction project in Hamilton's history, he traveled
extensively to appraise other college and university science facilities
to assure that Hamilton's new center would incorporate the best design
ideas.
Boston-born, Anthony returned to the banks of the Charles after
graduating from Hamilton and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business
School. He soon found employment in the real estate investment
operations of New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. In 1982 he became a
founding partner of Copley Real Estate Advisors.
In addition to his business activities, Anthony has served as president
of Greater Boston Community Development, Inc., a nonprofit organization
dedication to providing housing for low- and middle-income residents.
He and his wife Barbara regularly serve as welcoming hosts to
Hamiltonians whenever they are in the Boston area, whether it be for
presidential visits, Rising Star luncheons or Annual Fund breakfasts.
The couple often returns to the Hill, where they shared their first
date in 1957.
Key Awards
The College salutes the following College Key Award recipients who
were honored last spring for a service or activity that directly
benefited a volunteer program:
Bob and Kathy Booth P'06 were instrumental in developing The
Philadelphia Art Weekend in October 2004. The 56 participants visited
museums and the homes and collections of Hamilton families in the area.
Kathy and Bob hosted a luncheon where they shared their expertise and
passion for collecting. The Booths are members of the Parents Advisory
Council, and Kathy is a member of the College's Committee on the Visual
Arts.
As a volunteer with the World-Wide Admission Volunteer Effort (WAVE),
Geoff Emerson '61 has interviewed dozens of international applicants on
behalf of Hamilton. He is credited with single-handedly raising the
profile of Hamilton in China; Chinese students have even been known to
call the Admission Office asking for an interview with Mr. Emerson!
Class President Tom Griggs '84 maintains consistent communications with
classmates via e-mail, letter and telephone. The results speak for
themselves: at its 20th reunion, his class boasted the largest turnout
of any class, very possibly setting a record for 20th reunion
attendance. Giving participation for the class has grown significantly
during his presidency (from 48 percent to 54 percent), while Annual
Fund dollars have nearly doubled. Griggs also is a long-time admission
volunteer.
Anne and Jim Schoff '68, P'94 host 20-25 students and professors each
year at Wenonah Lodge, the Great Camp they own on Upper Saranac Lake.
The group is comprised of the participants in the Sophomore Seminar
"Forever Wild: The Cultural and Natural Histories of the Adirondack
Park." In addition to providing meals and lodging, the Schoffs bring to
their home park commissioners, public policy experts, naturalists and
environmentalists to discuss Adirondack Park issues. Jim is also former
president of the Northern Ohio Alumni Association. He has helped
Hamiltonians obtain summer employment and has offered training programs
and employment opportunities at his firm, Developers Diversity Realty
Corp. He is a member of the Leadership Gifts Council for the Excelsior
Campaign.
The Volunteer of the Year and College Key awards are presented by the Alumni Council on behalf of the Alumni Association.
