Walter Beinecke

Friends and Faculty


Walter Beinecke, Jr., a life trustee of the College and former chairman of the board of Kirkland College, died on May 23, 2004, at his home on the island of Nantucket. He was 86 years old.

Appointed as a charter trustee in 1960, Walter Beinecke chaired the trustee committee that was instrumental in the planning that led to the creation of Kirkland College. His benefactions to Hamilton were many and, in appreciation, Hamilton's Student Activities Village bears his name. An heir to the S&H Green Stamps fortune, he never attended college, but he became devoted to Hamilton and its welfare. Beyond College Hill he was best known for his contributions to the historic preservation and the commercial revitalization of his beloved Nantucket.

Cassius W. Curtis, instructor in physics, 1928-30, died in Bethlehem, PA, on December 17, 2004 at the age of 98. Beginning at Hamilton, he went on to teach for 40 years, the last 30 at Lehigh University.

Ralph N. Johanson
, assistant professor of mathematics, 1943-44, died in Needham, MA, on October 2, 2004. After leaving College Hill he taught at Boston University and served as head of the mathematics department and director of the computer center at Bentley College until his retirement in 1993.

Vincent O. McBrien, visiting instructor in mathematics, 1943-44, died in Northbridge, MA, on February 4, 2005. His long and distinguished academic career included some 30 years of teaching at the College of the Holy Cross.

John H. Jacobson, assistant professor of philosophy, 1957-63, died on February 8, 2005, in Sarasota, FL. After beginning his career in higher education at Hamilton, he went on to conclude it as president for 12 years of Hope College in Michigan.

Chandradhar Sharma, visiting professor of philosophy, 1963-64, died on February 28, 2004. A well-known scholar of Indian philosophy, he was associated with Banaras Hindu University and Jabalpur University for 32 years.

William Klingensmith
, medical director of the Thomas Brown Rudd Health Center, 1975-79, died on January 28, 2005. Dr. Klingensmith, who practiced surgery in Amarillo, TX, for 25 years, came to Hamilton following his retirement at the age of 54. He and his wife Mary later returned to Amarillo, where they were residing at the time of Dr. Klingensmith's death.

David P. Robbins, visiting assistant professor of mathematics, 1977-78, died on September 4, 2003, in Princeton, NJ, of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 61. He was last employed by the Institute of Defense Analysis in Princeton, working on the solution of mathematical and cryptological problems.
