In the News - Summer 2008Hamilton Engage '08 Focuses on ElectionLocal TV Stations Report on Student Views(August 29, 2008) Nearly 300 students registered to vote and completed absentee ballot requests on Tuesday, Aug. 26, as a result of the efforts of Hamilton Engage 08. Two local television stations, NBC-affiliate WKTV and all news cable station News10Now, have reported on the group's success in registering students. More ... Hamilton One-Mile Run Held to Celebrate National RunCNN and Stars and Stripes Tell Story(August 26, 2008) Hamilton's Run for the Fallen mile-long memorial tribute on Sunday, Aug. 24, took place simultaneously with the national Run for the Fallen final run to and ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. More than 100 alumni, students, employees and community members joined in the event organized by Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient and Emma Woods '09. Isserman Interviewed by Former Secty. of Education BennettMorning in America Focuses on Himalayan Mountaineering(August 18, 2008) Maurice Isserman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of History, participated in a 45-minute discussion and call-in show with former U.S. Secretary of Education William Bennett on Bennett's nationally syndicated radio program, Morning in America, on Friday, August 15. Bennett contacted Isserman after reading Isserman's op-ed that appeared in The New York Times on Sunday, August 10, in which he compared the recent avalanche on the Himalayan mountain K2 with a similar accident that occurred in 1953. More ... Isserman Op-ed Appears in The New York Times(August 11, 2008)The New York Times published an opinion piece written by Maurice Isserman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of History, titled "The Descent of Men" in its Sunday "Week in Review" section. Isserman wrote the op-ed following the recent avalanche in Pakistan on K2, the world's second-highest peak, that took the lives of 11 climbers. Isserman is the co-author of the forthcoming Fallen Giants: A History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes published by Yale University Press and available in book stores next month. More ... CNBC Intern Klein '09 Participates in China SpecialProduction to Air on Aug. 3(August 2, 2008) "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It's the perennial question at family reunions and holiday dinners. When rising senior and communications major Stacey Klein was asked that question by her boss at CNBC this summer, she had the answer. After spending nine weeks at CNBC's Global Headquarters, she replied, "a television news producer." On Sunday, Aug. 3, the first television production in which she has played a role, "Made in China: The People's Republic of Profit," will air on CNBC at 10 p.m. ET. More ... Bellona organized the run in honor of Michael Cleary '03, his Hamilton roommate who was killed in Iraq, and all of the soldiers who have lost their lives in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, was quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education in a July 21 article titled "Spellings Campaign Runs Low on Time and Power to Persuade." In the article, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Monica Inzer discussed the fact that the college was doing a better job of attracting the kinds of applicants it wanted without merit aid offers. Kuhn '09 Interviews Authors in Huffington PostChronicles Day in the Life of a British MP(July 3, 2008) Hamilton rising senior Eric Kuhn '09, who spent the academic year at the London School of Economics, has recently written several articles for The Huffington Post. In his latest, "Political-Ish Summer Reads," Kuhn selected six top political fiction books and interviewed the authors, who range from the former executive director of the Christian Coalition to the author of the new Indiana Jones novel. Isserman Featured on American Public Media Interview(June 21, 2008)"Weekend America," a nationally syndicated radio show produced and distributed by American Public Media via NPR, will feature an interview with Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History, on the weekend of June 21. Part of an ongoing series titled "This Weekend in 1968," the interview includes Isserman's account of how on the night of his high school graduation in June 1968, he boarded a train for Washington, D.C. and joined a rally in support of the Poor People's Campaign. Klinkner Included in NPR InterviewSenator Obama's Candidacy Discussed(June 20, 2008) In a National Public Radio segment titled "Obama Scapegoat Fears," James S. Sherman Associate Professor of Government Philip Klinkner spoke about how the senator's candidacy brings out some conflicted feelings among African-Americans. "The concern expressed by African-Americans reminds me of after 1928. Al Smith was the first Catholic to run for president and lost. I'm sure a lot of Catholics after the crash, the Depression, said thank God he lost over Hoover, otherwise they'd blame us for it," said Klinkner. More ... Klinkner Quoted in Christian Science Monitor(June 4, 2008)Philip Klinkner, James S. Sherman Associate Professor of Government and Associate Dean of Students, got the last word in a Christian Science Monitor article titled "In Sealing Nomination, Obama Makes History" published Wednesday, June 4. The article chronicled Barack Obama's route to securing the Democratic presidential nomination and analyzed its unconventional nature. Klinkner observed that never before had a candidate attracted such a diverse coalition of supporters. More ... More ...News HighlightsStudents in New York Program Visit Whitney MuseumStudents in Hamilton's program in New York City visited the Whitney Museum on Sept. 3, where they toured the exhibit, "Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe." According to the Whitney Museum Web site, "Visionary designer, philosopher, poet, inventor, engineer, and advocate of sustainability, Buckminster Fuller was one of the great transdisciplinary thinkers of the last century with a legacy that extends to nearly every field of the arts and sciences."Environmental Justice and Sustainability Panel to Be Held on Sept. 9The Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center and the Diversity and Social Justice Project are focused on related themes this year: "sustainability: environment, health and poverty" and "environmental justice," respectively.
