Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale and Professors of Anthropology Tom Jones and Charlotte Beck recently published an article titled “Natural Selection and Material Culture” in a special edition of the journal Evolution: Education and Outreach. The article was a result of an invitation from Curator Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History Niles Eldredge and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Montana Anna M. Prentiss to participate in the volume focused on how scientists have used Darwinian Theory to examine variation in material culture.

In the article Goodale, Jones and Beck use several examples of modern and prehistoric material culture to demonstrate that cultural transmission operates in a similar manner as natural selection does on biological organisms over time.

Evolution: Education and Outreach targets “K-16 students, teachers and scientists alike, the journal presents articles to aid members of these communities in the teaching of evolutionary theory. It connects teachers with scientists by adapting cutting-edge, peer reviewed articles for classroom use on varied instructional levels.”
