Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz participated in a panel discussion on “Prison and the Academy” at Princeton University. Her talk focused on her work as part of the Hamilton Oneida Prison Education (HOPE) project at Hamilton and her work with Rhodessa Jones: The Medea Project for Incarcerated Women and HIV Circle. The panel addressed the question, “What is the ‘value’ of prison education?”

According to the panel organizers, “While some prison education advocates focus on the importance of accreditation and life skills, others emphasize the value of enriching the lives of incarcerated students, provoking critical thought, and providing space for creative engagement with the world.” The goal of the panel was to “provide a capacious framework for discussing everything from Pell grants to non-accredited course work.”
