Women's soccer withstands Oswego rally

The Hamilton College women’s soccer team (4-2-0) held off a late charge by SUNY Oswego, handing the host Lakers a 4-2 loss on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. Victoria Freeman ’16 scored twice, including an insurance goal with three minutes left.

The Continentals opened a 3-0 halftime lead before Oswego (3-4-0) scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span midway through the second period.

Freeman’s first goal of the season opened the scoring in the 21st minute. She took a pass in the box from Sara Lewis ’16 and put a low shot into the net. Five minutes later Halle Becker ’15 put the visitors up 2-0 by collecting a pass from Hannah Withiam '16 and sending it inside the near post.

The Continentals finished their first-half outburst with 3:58 left before intermission. Sophie Mayeux ’15 delivered a through ball into the box to Katie Kreider ’18, who turned it into her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Lewis and Mayeux recorded their first collegiate points during the 3-0 run.

In the 66th minute the Lakers got on the board on a goal by Tia Segretto ’15. Segretto scored her fourth goal of the year, taking a pass from Nicole Perniciaro ’17 and putting it inside the near post. Segretto and Sarah Grupp ’18 worked a give-and-go 2:54 later as Grupp pulled Oswego to within one with her first goal of 2014.

Hamilton’s defense held the Lakers without a shot after Grupp’s goal and Freeman sealed the win with her second goal of the day. She converted a pass from Rachel Hirsch ’15 for the first two-goal game of her career.

Emily Dumont ’18 made her first collegiate start for the Continentals and stopped a season-high seven shots. Oswego’s Alyssa Glasshagel ’16 also recorded seven saves.

Hamilton outshot the hosts 16-13, including a 12-5 advantage in the first half. The Continentals posted their 14th straight win over the Lakers and lead the all-time series, 16-4-1.

The Continentals return to NESCAC play on Saturday, Sept. 27, with an 11 a.m. game at Wesleyan. Oswego hosts SUNYAC rival Oneonta on Friday afternoon.
