Associate Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa and Hamilton seniors Paige Cross and Anna Zahm presented papers at the Northeastern Anthropological Association Conference.

Kimberly Bogardus ’14 has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for the 2013-14 academic year. She is among 271 scholars from across the U.S. to receive the Goldwater, the premier national undergraduate award in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Robert Hayden ’14 and Christopher Richardson ’14 received honorable mention.

A poetry review by creative writing major Nick Geisler ’14 was published in the spring issue of Boxcar Poetry Review. “Greg Alan Brownderville’s Gust” appears in the online journal’s “Reviews & Responses” section.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Adam W. Van Wynsberghe presented a seminar titled “Hitting the Target: Simulations of the ligand binding pathways of influenza neuraminidase” on Oct. 16 at Colgate University. The seminar was co-sponsored by Colgate’s chemistry and biology departments and primarily described the work of three undergraduate researchers in the Van Wynsberghe lab: Erica Losito ’12 and Carmen Montagnon ’13, as well as Jeffrey Sung of the University of California-San Diego.

Daniel O’Kelly’s article titled “4 study abroad hurdles” appeared on the USA Today College site on Aug. 6. O’Kelly ’14 is interning this summer with the Study Abroad Team at Go Overseas and plans to study abroad in Paris this fall. In his article, O’Kelly addressed the fears and concerns that sometimes stop students from considering studying in another country.

Shakil Hossain ’14, a chemistry concentrator with minors in mathematics and Middle East and Islamic world studies, aspires one day to become a physician. He hopes to establish a successful medical practice in the United States so that he can spend his spare time helping underprivileged women and children in Bangladesh. His summer internship at the Hope Foundation for the Women and Children of Bangladesh is the perfect fit for his long-term career goals.

The Hamilton Mathematics Department hosted the spring 2012 meeting of the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) on April 13 and 14.

Three Hamilton students were among 50 recipients of competitive scholarships to the 2012 New York State Summer Writers Institute. Martin Cain ’13, Joseph Michaels ’14 and Sarah Sgro ’14 were chosen from among more than 375 applicants to the prestigious institute that will take place in July at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.  Students were nominated by creative writing faculty at their institutions; applicants included graduate writers in MFA and Ph.D. programs.

Participants in the first Levitt Leadership Institute cohort headed to Washington, D.C. for the  second phase of the program during spring break. Led by Prudence Bushnell, former U.S. Ambassador to Kenya and Guatemala, the group continued their focus on the study of leadership, a program that was enhanced by daily meetings with Washington leaders. Funding for the entire program was provided by Arthur Levitt Jr.

It is not often that an archaeology class has the opportunity to excavate a site of probable historic significance without leaving campus. Having examined a previously discovered inscribed stone at the class’ site, members of the Archaeology of Hamilton’s Founding course have unearthed two additional inscribed stones in their first month of digging. The most recent was uncovered on Sept. 29 and is related to the other two, according to Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale, who developed and teaches the course.
