“The art world” is an abstract concept, consisting of careers in everything from law to painting to history. To an undergraduate, the concept of entering this fickle, fast-paced arena may be overwhelming or intimidating. During Fallcoming Weekend, Associate Professor of Art History Deborah Pokinski led an alumni panel discussion on “Careers in Art,” attracting dozens of students seeking advice. The discussion was held in the newly opened Wellin Museum of Art.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art will be featured on the locally produced, weekly television show Mohawk Valley Living on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. on WFXV (Channel 6 on Time Warner Cable) and will be rebroadcast next Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. The segment can be viewed on the show's site at approximately 10:10.

Preparation for the opening of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art was the focus of a WKTV news report on Sept. 20. Museum director Tracy Adler described the open design of the museum and the opportunity it offers students and visitors to see the processes involved in receiving and preparing art. Its two-story glass cases as well as expansive gallery space also allow viewers to see much more of the museum’s collection.

Students sometimes say that life at Hamilton exists in a “bubble” somewhat removed from real-world events off the Hill, but this does not hold true for Danielle Lashley ’13. She chose to spend her summer gaining valuable career experience right here on campus, by pursuing modern studio art work supported by an Emerson Foundation grant. Lashley, an art concentrator, is working with Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh to get a taste of what life as a full- time studio artist might be like.

The Atelier Four – Professors of Art Bruce Muirhead and William Salzillo, with Amy Buchholz ’80 and Jake Muirhead ’86 – have prints on display in a national exhibition at the Old Print Shop in New York City. The 79th Members Exhibition of the Society of American Graphic Artists is on display through June 29.
