Professional News Style

Official Hamilton College publications, such as Web pages, conform to Associated Press style. The following list contains some of the common edits that are made to news items.

  • Please do not enter news until an event has occurred or until a paper is actually published, not when it is accepted for publication.

  • Use "titled" when referencing a paper or lecture name, not "entitled."

  • If news is about a conference attended, please include city and dates.

  • When a month is used with a specific date, abbreviate all but March, April, May, June and July. For example, use Jan. 23, not January 23 or MLA style: 23 January, 2007.

  • Dates should not include "th," "rd," "st" and "th" after a date. They were married on Feb. 19 not Feb. 19th. Use "th" when referring to a century: the 19th century or for an anniversary: the 10th anniversary of …

  • Do not use the year when describing when a lecture/conference took place. It is understood to be this year.

  • Use italics for book and magazine titles; use quotation marks for the names of papers presented.

  • Put quotation marks outside of punctuation: His paper, "The Legacy of Hamilton," was presented…

  • Titles are usually only capitalized if they appear before the name of a person.

  • If news includes a faculty member from another institution (co-author, co-chair) please limit their information to their name and institution's name.

  • Word count estimate for news items: 50 - 100
  • Numbers under 10 are spelled out, 10 and over are expressed in digits
