Hamilton has begun a partnership with Hannaford Supermarket in Clinton to recycle plastic bags and wraps from students, faculty, staff, and the athletic department. Plastic bag recycling stations are available in Beinecke and the Athletic Training Room (in the Field House).
In December 2008, Physical Plant installed the first two of three Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors in front of the Alumni Gymnasium and Commons Dining Hall. The other compactor will be installed by the Martin's Way Bridge. The compactors use passive solar technology and are designed to reduce the need for trash pickups. Attached to each container is a bottle and can recycling station, which should reduce trash contamination outdoors.
Starting Monday, April 6, 2009, Hamilton will begin recycling CDs and DVDs through the CD Recycling Center. Stations will be located in Beinecke (by the Mail Center), Library, and McEwen. The program accepts all unwanted CDs, DVDs, and their cases (please recycle paper inserts).
When funds become available, all dorms will have recycling bin lids on paper and container group bins to make recycling easier. Bin lids are currently on most bins in academic buildings and offices.
In May 2008, the Recycling Task Force began the first annual Cram & Scram Reuse Program. Recycling Task Force volunteers held a sale of collected dorm furnishings, electronics, kitchen supplies, and school supplies in late August 2008. The sale went amazingly well, as nearly everything was sold and there were many satisfied customers. For more information, please click here.
December 13-19, 2008, the Recycling Task Force held its first annual Mini Cram & Scram. We collected nonperishable food, clothing, and other reusable items. From this collection, we were able to donated 27 pounds of food to the Clarks Mills Food Pantry and 587 pounds of reusable items to the Salvation Army. Thanks for a great success!
In December 2008, the Recycling Task Force held a book drive to benefit Prevent Child Abuse New York. Through collection bins in Beinecke Village and the Bookstore, we were able to prevent 307 pounds of books from ending up in the landfill! 117 of the donated books will be resold, and the rest will be donated to school libraries or recycled. We look forward to the next book drive in May!
