Student Assembly Minutes

September 14, 2009


 
Call to Order: 9:05 p.m.

Carolyn Carpan- Burke Library

The library catalogue has been updated
     i. Have improved the functionality and would like student feedback
The inter-library loan program now has a "Status Page" under your account so you can track books that you are checking out

Media Library Policy change
     i. Students can check out any DVDs or VHSs for 3 days rather than just the time to watch them in the media library
     ii. Have done some refurbishing to some of the chairs in the seating areas on the second floor and to the right once you enter the doors

Desk lamps have been added to the reading area on the first floor
     i. If there isn't enough lighting in that area or in the second floor, let the library staff know
Library Committee representatives
     i. Professor Rebecca Murtaugh is the chair of the committee
     ii. Will look into getting more lighting for the study areas on the 3rd floor, specifically for "the caves"
     iii. Seniors have a "reserve area" where they can keep their thesis books and the area has been expanded last year
     iv.     Still pursuing the idea of lockers

Please reserve the group study rooms through the events calendar online or reserve the rooms directly at the circulation desk

Funding
Mock Trial receives full funding, $81
Muslim Students Association receives full funding, $2,664.9
HEAG receives $932.50
Weekly total: $3678.29

Committee Reports
Food
     i.     First meeting will be this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in KJ
Facilities
     i.   Meeting next Monday, Sept. 21st at 6:00 p.m. in McEwen
     ii.  Looked into the lighting problems on campus
     iii. Lights on G-Road, at the Bundy crosswalk, and in front of the Health Center will be replaced
     iv. Individual dorm problems are addressed by the RAs via work-orders
Student Interest
     i.     Meeting time will be adjusted
     ii.     Will continue the economic lecture series with Professor Bradfield
     iii.     Will try to co-host etiquette dinners for seniors with the Career Center and HALT
     iv.     Would like to work towards thanking the fire and police departments by having large cards for all students to sign
     v.     Going to get student suggestions for bookstore apparel
     vi.     Would like more text books to be available in the library
Social traditions
     i.     Making progress on Fall Fest and should have the budget proposal once the food is figured out
     ii.     Brainstorm ideas on how to get Hamilton students to come down to Fall Fest
     iii.     Fall Fest is from 12:00 – 4:00 on October 25th on the Clinton Village Green
Technology
     i.    A survey went out about cable television
          -  Even if Hamilton got rid of cable, we would still get local channels, campus channels, and the movie channel
     ii.     Meeting in the Commons balcony at 6:00 on Thursday
Diversity and Accessibility
     i.     E-mailed the person in charge of ISA and will try to help them with their dessert booth during Parents Weekend
      ii.     Will try to have another fall trip to New York City
Elections
     i.     Tonight at midnight the freshman class is voting for their class representatives

New Business
A member of the student body at large suggested:
     i.     Pleased that Student Assembly minutes are sent out, but would appreciate it if the names of members who voice various opinions are included
     ii.     This would help provide for a more objective election process
     iii.     Requests:
1.     From now on, include the names of members who voice any opinions
2.     Pass a resolution or amendment to that effect
      iv.     Suggestion will be discussed next week by the Student Assembly

Announcements

First-year students, remember to vote for your class representatives!
SA's ad hoc committee on a Statement of Community Values is having a meeting Wednesday, September 16th at 4pm. Email agoldste@hamilton.edu if you are interested in joining the committee (Open to the entire campus)
Community Forum will be in the Events Barn on Friday, September 18th, 12-1:30 p.m.
Semester-long budget proposals are due at noon on Saturday, September 19th and will be reviewed on the 20th
Student Assembly has been advancing loans for student organizations for philanthropic events, but since this is going against the bylaws, Student Assembly will no longer be doing this. A suggestion has been made to amend the bylaws that limit these loans.
