Marcus Bell received his B.S. in sociology from Grand Valley State University in 2010, and received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 2017. In his work, Bell explores processes of ideology, inequality, and identity, focusing on the ways they intersect, contradict, and reinforce one another. Broadly speaking, Bell uses qualitative and historical methods to decompose the numerous ways that racial ideology, racial inequality, and racial identity are constructed and experienced, as well as how these processes change over time. More specifically, he examines the ways that race and racial identity are localized, shifting from one environment to the next and shaping the way people understand themselves and the racial world around them. Bell has published widely, including numerous journal articles, book chapters, and a book project with Duke University Press.
