María Sánchez-Reyes (she/her/ella) is a queer migrant from México and a first-generation college graduate.

She received her Ph.D. from New York University, her M.Phil. from NYU,  master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, and bachelor's from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico.

Her dissertation “From Experience to Expression in Medieval Song” looks at the movement from silence into song in order to show how poetic tropes in troubadour song are stages that allow language to emerge. This is achieved by using troubadour lyric stanzas (literally “standing places”) as metaphors for understanding the gradient stages of the subject’s trajectory from silence into song —a linguistic mode that escapes the dichotomy of expression and experience.

Her research focuses on medieval music, song, dance, and performance, and their connections to the simultaneous advent of subjectivity and language.
