Software Server and MSS "going away"

Does your department have a folder on the Software Server? Perhaps some of your courses have needed digital media storage on MSS? If so, have we got some news for you!

It's time to renew the servers connected to these two storage services, and the perfect time for all of us to consider whether we can make this service easier for everyone, but particularly for the faculty and students. To that end, ITS will be merging these two storage servers into a single one dedicated to course resource storage. No longer will you need to remember that your department server is on \\software\academic but your conference poster is on \\mss\storage. We will create a single server, with a single, we hope meaningful, name.

Wait, this is the middle of spring semester! What is ITS thinking? We're thinking we should tell you now that at the end of the semester, probably right after Commencement, this move will take place. We'll be sending you more information when we get closer to the actual move, but we want you to have plenty of opportunity to see this change coming.

We have not yet determined a name for this new larger server (suggestions are welcome), but we will continue the basic folder structure that exists on Software right now. All of your data will be moved from Software and MSS to the new server. Of course, less data would be easier, so if you were to trim out your no longer used data before the move happened, ITS would greatly appreciate it.
