David Wisner: "The Crisis of the European Union and the Future of Greece"

BY Hunter Green '16

On September 27th, 2012, Hamilton College had the privilege of hosting Dr. David Wisner, Executive Director of the Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service at The American College of Thessaloniki, to deliver a fascinating lecture on “The Crisis of the European Union and the Future of Greece.”  With an audience made up of both interested Continentals and students from Professor Alan Cafruny’s International Relations classes, Dr. Wisner laid out the current economic and political problems facing Greece after the 2009 American subprime mortgage crisis. These problems, among others, include severe austerity, a bloated public sector, problematic tax evasion, corrupted welfarism, and the spread of a neo-Nazi, fascist organization known as Golden Dawn.  These problems have generated new fears over a potential Greek exit from the Eurozone and the domino effect that could result in the European Union from such an action.
