Charles Watkinson, director of the University of Michigan Press, will give the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 4:10 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. His lecture is titled “Open Access Monographs. Why Should Authors, Librarians, and Administrators Care?” and is free and open to the public.

Director of Research and Instruction Services Lisa Forrest recently published an article in College & Research Libraries News (C&RL News). “Going Analog and Getting Artsy: Programming in the Academic Library” highlighted novel ways that Hamilton’s librarians are supporting the college’s educational goals through programming.

Glynis Asu, Lisa Forrest and Tanapat (Ice) Treyanurak ’17 discussed the LITS Peer Research Tutor program during a conference on “The Art of Librarianship” presented last month by the SUNY Librarians Association.

Three members of Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) – Dave Smallen, Maureen Scoones and Kristin Strohmeyer – presented during the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC) held June 16-18 at Lafayette College.

The winners of the Beverly S. and Eugene M. Tobin Employee Awards were announced and employees celebrating milestone service anniversaries were honored at Hamilton’s 31st annual employee service recognition luncheon on May 18 on Dunham Green.

Several members of the Hamilton community presented during the Bucknell Digital Scholarship Conference. The inaugural conference, held Nov. 14-16 at Bucknell University, focused on “Collaborating Digitally: Engaging Students in Faculty Research.”

Hamilton is now the proud home of a DJI Phantom 2. The device is a “high performance, reliable, and easy to use small unmanned aerial system (UAS), [designed] for commercial and recreational use,” as the product’s website states.

Hamilton College and Colgate University jointly announced today their partnership as new contributing members in the nonprofit, online learning platform edX. Founded by Harvard University and MIT, edX currently offers more than 150 courses in many areas of study, including the arts and humanities, public health, law, math and computer science. Its focus is to create access to the world’s best education globally, improve on-campus education and conduct research to enhance teaching and learning.

Upson Chair for Public Discourse and Professor of Geosciences Barbara Tewksbury gave the keynote address at the 32nd National Symposium and 1st International Geoscience Congress on Feb. 18. The event was in Tehran, Iran, and because Tewksbury was unable to be there, “University-Level Geoscience Education for the 21st Century,” was presented via video.

On September 15, David Smallen became the Vice President for Libraries and Information Technology, a position that allows him to create new pathways of collaboration between the traditional functions of both the Burke Library and Information Technology (IT). Smallen has been at Hamilton since 1972 — “I sometimes joke that I handed out the pistols at Hamilton’s duel,” he said — and has been involved with the Information Technology department since 1974.
