On Florida’s Wakulla and St. Marks rivers, a group of Hamilton researchers spent their summer snorkeling for freshwater snails, watching for alligators and manatees, and collecting samples that preserve thousands of years of environmental history.

“Pleistocene record of a dynamic, fluctuating lacustrine margin from the Turkana Basin, Kenya,” co-authored by Associate Professor of Geosciences Catherine (Cat) Beck, appears in the October issue of Quaternary Science Reviews from Elsevier.

As the 2025-26 academic year wrapped up, students were honored with scholarships and awards, and presented research at professional conferences.

When Audrey Alix ’25 sits down at her desk in Utica’s City Hall, she’s greeted by the familiar sight of her class binder from Hamilton’s GIS for Geoscientists course. Occasionally, she will thumb through its pages, searching for techniques she learned on the Hill. On her computer, Alix keeps data that she created during an Emerson Grant project mapping the parks and trees of Utica. Every day, she is reminded of the work she put in to get to her current position as a city planner in Utica, N.Y.

Last year at about this time, members of the Class of 2025 were starting to receive news about acceptances to post-graduate and professional degree programs. We caught up with a few of these recent graduates to find out what they’ve learned, what they’ve enjoyed, and any challenges they faced as they pursue graduate degrees.

Associate Professor of Geosciences and co-director of the Geoarchaeology program Catherine Beck co-authored a paper published recently in the journal Trends and Ecology and Evolution. She also co-led a workshop on planning and implementing continental scientific drilling projects at the 30th Colloquium of African Geology in Nairobi.

Four Hamilton College faculty members were awarded Hamilton’s highest awards for teaching by Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo. Announced during the May 6 faculty meeting, those honored were selected from among 47 nominations received from 80 students.
