An alarming robbery at Racheter World Amusement Park in Midlands results in the death of park security guard Winston Thomas. In an impressive display of legal and communication acumen, the Hamilton College Mock Trial team brought the criminal case of Bowman v. State of Midlands to court on April 19 and April 20 against legal teams from Cornell and Rochester.  This tournament, hosted on the Hamilton campus, was the College’s first home invitational.

The Huffington Post published an opinion piece co-authored by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds titled “The Liberal Arts Contribution to edX.”  The piece explored the fact that “the residential liberal arts model that our institutions and many other liberal arts colleges have embodied for two centuries has something to contribute to the open online platform: promoting a wide exploration of knowledge and the reciprocal illumination of seemingly disparate disciplines through critical thinking, discourse and writing.”

Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, was interviewed for a feature in the April 13 issue of The New York Times Education Life section titled “What Makes a Positive College Experience?” The article offered a glimpse of the extensive results from Chambliss’ decade-long, Mellon-funded student study culminating in the newly published How College Works. Co-authored with Chambliss’ former student and current University of Chicago doctoral student Christopher Takacs ’05, the book was released by Harvard University Press in March.

Derek Jeter, captain and shortstop of the New York Yankees, will be the featured guest in a moderated question-and-answer chat at Hamilton College on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Jeter will appear as the next guest in Hamilton’s Sacerdote Great Names Series. The event is free and open to the public. Further details will be announced in September.

Peter Kazickas '15 (Amagansett, N.Y./St. Mark's School [Mass.]) of the Hamilton College men’s basketball team was one of 10 members of the 2014 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team® honored at the NCAA Division I Final Four at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday night.

Catherine Brown, senior director of visual communications in Hamilton’s Communications Department, was honored as the 2014 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. John Hadity ’83, president of the Alumni Association, presented the award on April 4 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.

Award-winning author and journalist Christopher Dickey will deliver the Commencement address at Hamilton College on Sunday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Dickey will be awarded an honorary degree, along with Deborah Bial, founder and president of the Posse Foundation, and Thomas Schwarz '66, president of Purchase College. Singer and songwriter Rosanne Cash will offer the Baccalaureate sermon on Saturday, May 24, at 3 p.m., in the Scott Field House. She will receive an honorary degree from Hamilton in December.

When celebrated Indian street photographer Pranlal K. Patel died in January at the age of 104, he left behind an impressive legacy and 70 years worth of works. An exhibit at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art has brought new life to some of the artist’s images from the early twentieth century.

Ten Hamilton students interested in the art market visited Christie’s fine arts auction house in New York City on March 28. A massive, vibrant Sol LeWitt mural greeted attendees at Christie’s headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza and foreshadowed an exciting day. Mary Evans, director of Hamilton’s Career Center, remarked, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the art auction business in an internationally pre-eminent setting.”

Some people know, from the first time they see their name in print, that they want to write. Others learn over time that they excel in editing. And still others don’t realize until their senior spring that they possess the interpersonal and persuasive skills that make successful publicists. On March 29, Hamilton students and alumni convened at the Brooklyn Public Library to discuss the publishing industry and the myriad roles one might play within it. The event, called CareerExplo: Publishing, was sponsored by the Maurice Horowitch Career Center.
