  • Officials at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) have recently selected Tsion Tesfaye ’16 to attend their annual meeting in recognition of her innovative project Youth for Ethiopia. It will take place in Miami in March.

  • The Levitt Center hosted its second StartupExperience, an intensive two-day workshop for students interested in social and commercial entrepreneurship on Nov. 8 and 9.  Participants worked in teams to learn about problem identification, technology trends, design thinking, business model innovation, customer development and pitching, and in the process gained the confidence to create a viable start-up.

  • Hamilton College has been designated a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka U, the higher education program of Ashoka, an international organization that promotes social innovation to solve society’s most persistent social issues. The designation recognizes Hamilton for being a leader in social innovation education among an exclusive network of only 29 colleges and universities worldwide.

  • The Levitt Center kicked off its first ever Social Innovation Fellows Program during the second week of Hamilton’s spring break.  The program was designed and run by Anke Wessels, executive director of the Center of Transformative Action, a non-profit affiliated with Cornell University.  Her course, “Social Innovators and Entrepreneurship,” was selected by the Ashoka Foundation as one of the 10 best social entrepreneurship courses in the country in 2011. The Levitt program was a weeklong intensive program designed to be a condensed version of Wessel’s award-winning course.

  • Thirteen Hamilton students are spending a week of their spring break taking a new course in social entrepreneurship.  Anke Wessels of Cornell University is leading the course that introduces participants to social entrepreneurs, innovators and visionaries – people who are coming up with new methods to resolve pressing social problems.

  • Hamilton alumnus Luvuyo Mandela ’09 returned to the Hill on Oct. 29 to speak about his work as a social entrepreneur in South Africa. His former philosophy professor, A. Todd Franklin, introduced Mandela and thanked him for agreeing to speak to the small gathering, heavily composed of students in Franklin’s “Philosophy of Race, Gender and Culture” course.

  • This past weekend, Hamilton College held a series of events to kick off its spring social entrepreneurship programming.  The Levitt Center – in conjunction with the Career Center and the COOP – sponsored various talks and information sessions to get students thinking about social innovation.
