Six Hamilton seniors have been awarded U.S. State Department Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships for 2023-24.

Dewayne Martin ’24 has been awarded a 2023 Truman Scholarship, the nation’s premiere scholarship for students interested in pursuing public service. Martin becomes the second Hamilton student to receive the award created in 1975; the first was Frederick Nelson in 1978.

Elliot Carlson '23 and Jacob Gliedman '23 won this year’s Pitch Competition and $20,000 for their comprehensive career services platform RAIN, a product meant to “disrupt the job search process” by providing a way for job-seekers to explore, create, network, and execute the job recruitment process, all in one platform.

Hamilton students take on unique projects that reflect their talents and interests. In many cases, they collaborate with faculty mentors on this work, which often leads to co-authored papers, joint presentations at professional conferences, and professors mentoring students during academic competitions. Four students were awarded prizes in three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition held on March 4. Presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category, students addressed an assigned topic.

The town of Kirkland and village of Clinton are the Mohawk Valley recipients of a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant from New York State. It’s part of a total state commitment of $100 million in DRI funding and investments to help communities boost their economies by transforming downtowns into vibrant neighborhoods.

Ten Hamilton faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees at its March meeting. They include Ryan Carter (music), Jose Ceniceros (mathematics), Alexsia Chan (government), Justin Clark (philosophy), Matt Grace (sociology), Tom Helmuth ‘09 (computer science), Natalie Nannas (biology), Colin Quinn (anthropology), Anne Valente (literature and creative writing), and Keelah Williams (psychology).

Retired Navy Adm. Michelle J. Howard will deliver Hamilton’s 2023 Commencement address and receive an honorary degree on Sunday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Howard chaired the 2020-22 Congressional Naming Commission that identified and made recommendations to remove, rename, or modify Department of Defense assets that commemorated the Confederacy or those who voluntarily served it.

In its second meeting of the 2022-23 academic year, the Hamilton chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elected 15 members of the Class of 2023.

For the 19th consecutive year, Hamilton College has been named a Fulbright U.S. Student Program top-producing institution. Sixteen students and six graduates applied for the 2022-23 academic year cycle. Of those, 13 students were named semi-finalists, 10 received the grant, and one was selected as an alternate.
