Michael Breslin '13, far right, at work during his year of research.

Michael Breslin '13 was a theatre major who received a Hamilton Bristol Fellowship, an award that allows students to spend their first post-graduate year traveling the world to study what they want. Breslin's project was "Gender Play: Displaying, Transgressing, and Transcending Gender Identity in World Theatre.

It was time well spent for Breslin.

“My Bristol year had a wide range of incredible experiences – from studying carnival dances in Brazil, to observing rehearsals at the National Theatre in London, to forming a deep friendship and artistic collaboration with Didik Nini Thowok, a Javanese cross-gender performer,” Breslin says. “When I returned, I worked with Lower Manhattan Cultural Council helping to produce artist residencies in vacant real estate in the Financial District and produce public programs throughout Lower Manhattan and Governors Island.”

He also directed and performed in his own performance, kiss me just once more, which debuted at the Queer New York International Arts Festival at Dixon Place in 2015, in collaboration with Alison McLaughlin '11.

Next up for Breslin – he’s pursuing a master’s in fine arts in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism at the Yale School of Drama. “After Yale, I hope to work as an artistic director or performance curator at a performing arts center or museum, while continuing my own artistic practice as a generative theatre artist and performer,” he says.
