James Oakes, author and Distinguished Professor of History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will deliver a lecture titled, “The Scorpion’s Sting: The Irreconcilable Conflict Over Slavery” on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m., in Bradford Auditorium in the Kirner-Johnson Building.  The lecture is free, open to the public and sponsored by the Hamilton College History Department.

Oakes holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.  He has written several critically-acclaimed histories, including Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865 (2012), which describes how the two goals of the Civil War – reunification and emancipation – were combined from the beginning of the conflict, and The Radical and the Republican: Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and the Triumph of Antislavery Politics (2004), which explores how Lincoln and Douglass came to agree on the question of slavery.  His upcoming work is titled Emancipation: The End of Slavery in the United States.

Oakes will sign copies of his books, which will be available for sale following the lecture.
