Jack Martinez Arias

Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Jack Martínez Arias oversaw the critical edition of Junín (1930), a poetry collection by Enrique Bustamante y Ballivián. This edition brings back a long-overlooked work that explores the effects of large-scale mining on Indigenous Andean lands.

The facsimile includes a study in which Martínez Arias argues that Junín is the first poetic response to the extractivism that transformed the Andes. The collection blends modernist aesthetics with a sharp socio-environmental critique, anticipating contemporary debates on sustainability and Indigenous rights.

By bringing Junín back into circulation, this edition helps restore an important part of Peru’s literary history and encourages discussion on the lasting impact of resource extraction in the region.
