  • Twenty Hamilton students and Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings competed in the 31st annual Adirondack Canoe Classic known as “the 90-miler,” a three-day canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, held Sept. 5-7.

  • Students in Visiting Assistant Professor of English Janelle Schwartz's Extreme Adventure Narrative class practiced winter rescue in Root Glen last week. They were reading Joe Simpson's book Touching the Void and had a field day to experience what it's like moving an injured person in the cold.

  • Professional alpine climber and mountain guide Emilie Drinkwater visited Hamilton on March 3 to coach climbers on the rock wall and share her stories.  She works in the Adirondacks, the Tetons in Wyoming and Mount McKinley in Alaska.

  • Over winter break, members of the Hamilton Outing Club joined Director Andrew Jillings in Ecuador for three weeks of trekking, hiking, waiting out the rain and exploring the rainforest. Clair Stover ’14, Hanna Kingston ’15, Lindsey Luker ’15, Annie Emanuels ’16, Alex Doig ’16 and Jillings began the trip with a five-day trek around Piñan, a remote village tucked among the Andes.

  • The Hamilton College canoe team continued a recent tradition by participating on Sept. 7 in the Adirondack Canoe Classic, a three-day, 90-mile race that tests outdoor skills, endurance and poise under pressure.

  • More than 20 Hamilton students and staff members attended the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) annual Northeast Regional Conference in Becket, Mass., from April 5-7. Hamilton students attended a wide variety of workshops covering all aspects of experiential and wilderness education. The Hamilton Outdoor Leadership Center has been sending students to the conference for many years.

  • The Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) ran two introductory ice climbing trips to the Adirondacks on Feb. 22-24. The trips, led by Director of Outdoor Education Andrew Jillings, focused on teaching students the basics of climbing waterfall ice using crampons and ice tools.

  • Environmentalist, climber, filmmaker and author Jonathan Waterman will present a lecture on his latest book, Running Dry: A Journey from Source to Sea Down the Colorado River, on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center.

  • The Hamilton College Marathon Canoe Racing Team kicked off its first fall as an official club sport with four boats in the 29th Adirondack Canoe Classic, “The 90-Miler.” Over the weekend of Sept. 9-11, these teams raced with more than 250 other boats in the event hosted by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance.

  • Hamilton students gathered on Thursday at the Glen House for a party hosted by the Outdoor Leadership Center. The party, which was thrown in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Glen House’s dedication, featured refreshments and a variety of outdoors-themed games and competitions.
