Kindergarteners Create, Discuss, Explore

On Friday, May 15th over 60 kindergarteners from Clinton Elementary School came to the Wellin for an arts exposure experience with their teachers Mrs. Landry and Mrs. Stilz. For many of the children this was their first time visiting a museum, viewing contemporary artwork, artifacts, and antiquities. They spent time looking at works on view, discussing them, and creating their own works of art. Much of the dialogue was facilitated by Hamilton College students and Wellin staff members using Visual Thinking Strategies or VTS to encourage close looking. The children were asked what was going on in the artwork and had to provide the visual evidence to support their observations and conclusions. This and other exercises align with the state-wide standards and Common Core Curriculum.
