George Baker

George Baker returns to the Government Department, co-teaching a senior seminar in Lobbying and Government Relations which he has offered during each of the last four Presidential election seasons, beginning in 2008. An alumnus of Hamilton’s Semester in Washington Program (fall 1972), Baker has been very involved with that program since graduation, lecturing and providing Hamilton students internships during the semester. He graduated from Hamilton in 1974, and earned his law degree from Catholic University in 1977 where he was associate editor of the law review. A member of the New York and DC bars, Baker began his career with the Department of Energy’s Office of Hearings and about Appeals, enforcing and granting exceptions to the federal oil and gas price and supply controls during the OPEC oil embargo era. In 1980, he moved to Washington, D.C. law firm Williams & Jensen, which has widely recognized expertise in federal legislative and regulatory policy. Baker has been a principal of the firm since 1983. His legislative and administrative practice focuses on energy, environment, agriculture, land use, wildlife conservation, natural resource policy, and commodity futures and swaps regulation. Baker has served as president of the Hamilton Alumni Association and as a Hamilton trustee, and remains active in a wide array of alumni activities in support of the College and its various constituencies, especially its students and young alumni.
