Rand Carter
Professor of Art History Emeritus (retired)
Rand Carter joined the Hamilton faculty in 1970 after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and his master of fine arts degree and doctorate from Princeton University. His areas of interest include historic preservation, European art of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, neoclassicism, the history of furniture, environmental and ecological implications of architectural design, and urban planning. The author of a book on Karl Friedrich Schinkel and three guidebooks in the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica series, Professor Carter is a contributor to the Grove Dictionary of Art and the MacMillan Encyclopedia of Architects. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue study at the Coutauld Institute of the University of London.
